What forex trading is

Forex is the exchange of one currency for another, traded in pairs. Buying EUR/USD means buying the euro and selling the US dollar in a single position. Prices are quoted as moving in pips and points, the second last and last digit of the price, respectively.

The spread is the difference between the buy and sell price. On a standard lot of EUR/USD, one pip is worth $10, so a 0.03 pip average spread costs $0.30 per lot before the commission.

Majors, minors and exotics

TabTrade offers more than 60 currency pairs across three groups, each with its own liquidity and volatility profile.

Majors

The seven most popular pairs each include the US dollar. Deep liquidity keeps their spreads the lowest, averaging 0.04 pips on our Edge account in April 2026.

Analysis, commentary and community coverage tend to be extensive around trading these symbols, making them ideal for learning from others.

Minors

Crosses such as GBP/JPY and EUR/AUD join major currencies without the US dollar. Their higher volatility raises the size of price moves and usually widens the spread.

Minors suit traders comparing two economies directly rather than measuring either one against the dollar.

Exotics

Exotics often pair a major currency with a smaller or developing market currency, such as the Swedish krona (SEK) or Thai baht (THB).

They usually carry the widest spreads and often the sharpest moves on the platform. Traders in these pairs should account for the wider spreads and higher volatility.

When forex trades

The forex market runs 24 hours a day, five days a week, from the New Zealand open on Monday to the New York close on Friday. Liquidity and spreads often improve when London and New York overlap.

Spreads can widen around the daily rollover window and through major news releases. Session times for every instrument are found on our Instruments page.

Leverage up to 1:1000

Leverage of 1:1000 on the Edge account means a $100 margin controls a position of up to $100,000. Profits and losses both scale with the full position size, not the margin, so a 0.1% move against a fully leveraged position wipes the margin. Most experienced traders use a fraction of the available leverage; the maximum is a ceiling, not a target.
